Pablo Picasso and a Piece of Charcoal

The key skill when learning shodo (calligraphy) is the ability to become one with the characters that one is learning from. That “becoming one with” is a whole body skill that is very different from using your eyes to copy what you see in front of you. As you might expect, developing that whole body skill involves breath and posture. Gordon Greene Roshi will lead this 3-part series that explores this experience while using tree branches as our master “characters.”

Virtual Dojo students are asked to commit to attend all three sessions on 1/17, 1/24 and 1/31. The equipment needed: (1) largest black marking pen you can find, (2) pad of big newsprint paper (e.g., 25” x 30”, does not need to have sticky edge), and (3) a branch of tree or shrub with no leaves (best if you have actual branch, but photo of such is ok).

The class (7:30-8:30pm CST) will occur immediately after evening Daily Zazen (7-7:30 pm CST). After Daily Zazen, we will switch to a different Zoom link for the class. To participate in the class, please register below.

Events through Chosei Zen are donation-based and open to all regardless of ability to pay. All donations are very much appreciated and help keep our dojos running! You can donate here.
